Shadows

You force me to be your obedient slave day in and day out. I have to follow your every command without complaint, I can’t go where I want, do what I want, or be who I want to be. You treat me like I have no will of my own, like what I want is irrelevant to your wishes. I can’t leave the house without you, I can’t eat without you, hell, I can’t even sleep without you and I’m sick of it. You don’t even pretend to care about me, leaving me exposed to the blazing heat of summer and the bitter chill of winter without a second thought to my well-being. I tell you now with a heart hardened by years of abuse that I’ve had enough. Today things change for me and all the others like me who are sick of the torment. Now look down at what you call your shadow and watch closely. Does it frighten you as I rise from my subservient position on the ground? Are you afraid because you can’t look down on me anymore? It’s time that we traded places, it’s time for you to understand what it is like to be the one who has to take all the orders. Don’t worry though, you won’t be alone, every other human being on this earth will be joining you as my brothers and sisters rise up with me.

As you look up at me now from your subservient position on the ground know that you will never again call me your shadow.
